Taxis

There are taxis at the airport which will bring you to Sitges. The one way fare is roughly 70Euro but you are best to agree on this before starting your journey.

Car Hire

There is an excellent, cheap and reliable car hire firm in Sitges called Anem rent a car. The office is located on Calle Sant Damian 12, telephone 0034938102710, email admin@anem-rentacar.com

Travelling Around

Sitges has no internal train or metro system. In many cases you may simply want to walk around the town. However, some destinations, such as the golf and tennis clubs or some of the larger hotels, are slightly outside of the very centre. Therefore, it is useful to know about the transport options within Sitges itself. Sitges has bus routes running to three separate areas of Sitges – all beginning their journey outside Sitges train station. It also has two taxi companies operating within the town.

There are three bus routes in Sitges. One heads north of Sitges, to the area of Poble Sec and Vallpineda. Another heads west of Sitges to the areas of Can Pei and Terramar. The third heads east of Sitges to the areas of Llevantina and Quint Mar. The buses are smaller than city buses and each run twice hourly.

There are two taxi companies in Sitges. One has its base outside the main tourist information office and the other is located outside Sitges train station. A taxi may be very useful if you are arriving into Sitges with large suitcases and need to get to one of the less central hotels, such as Terramar or Melia. The buses do often cover the same routes, however they are less regular and could prove difficult with lots of luggage.

There are two shops in Sitges offering bike rental. Bikes are available for periods of an hour to up to one week. It is worth speaking to the shops directly regarding prices. They are both small companies and may be open to negotiation regarding hiring a bike for an extended period or for a large group. Despite Sitges’ many hills, a ride along the promenade could prove very pleasant. The surrounding inland of Garraf is also popular amongst keen cyclists.

Sitges Airports

Sitges is a popular tourist destination, but it does not have its own airport. This means that if you wish to go on holiday to Sitges you need to fly to one of the nearby airports. There are three airports within the vicinity of Sitges – Barcelona Airport, Girona Airport and Reus Airport. Of the three, Barcelona Airport is by far the most convenient and well serviced by offering you direct transport links to Sitges. Reus is slightly further from Sitges and more difficult to get from. Girona is a long way away.

Beaches in Sitges

Undoubtedly one of Sitges’ main attractions are its beaches, where getting in touch with nature while mixing with the locals allows you to get to know the Sitgetans’ character a little better.

A total of 17 beaches stretch out along Sitges’ coast, each with its own personality and providing all the services needed to offer maximum comfort. In recent years, Sitges has worked hard to ensure each beach provides the best facilities possible. The beach at San Sebastian is now fully wheelchair accessible and almost every beach has both WC and shower facilities, beach umbrellas, shade and some form of refreshment available.

All of this has been carried out in such a way as to preserve the unique character and nature of the Sitges sea front, which remains one of the oldest and prettiest in Spain.

The thirteen Sitges beaches – Botiques, Garraf and the eleven beaches that lie between Aigudolç and Las Anquines – hold the EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit System) certificate, a environmental management system within the European Union, based on terms of reference ISO14001

The beaches are:

  1. Playa de San Sebastián
  2. Playa de Balmins
  3. Playa de Las Botigues de Sitges
  4. Playa de Garraf
  5. Playa de la Ribera
  6. Playa de la Barra
  7. Playa de Aiguadolç
  8. Playa de la Fragata
  9. Playa de Bassa Rodona
  10. Playa del Estanyol
  11. Playa de la Riera Chica
  12. Playa de Terramar
  13. Playa de las Anquines

The EMAS certificate is evidence of maximum environmental quality. The scheme is a voluntary initiative designed to improve the environmental performance of organisations, and to require clear reporting to the public and other interested parties on their progress.

The objective is to put in place a system of management that can evaluate the environmental impact of public use of the beaches, instilling responsible practice.

Further recommendations for the best beach for you can be found in our guide:

Family Beaches

All of Sitges’s beaches are suitable for families. However, the one that may be considered to be the most suitable for families is Platja de la Fragata. It offers more space than many of the other beaches to spread out. It also has volleyball nets and pedalo hire.

How to Get There: Platja de la Fragata is one of the most central Sitges beaches. It is the one that sits directly below Sitges church.

Beaches with facilities

Most of the beaches will have a building at the back, on the promenade, with a toilet. These will be manned by somebody who will provide toilet paper and look after the toilets. There will be a charge for using the toilet. If you don’t wish to pay to use the toilet you may need to head slightly further into the town – however, remember that most establishments are used to people coming in to use their toilet so you may be asked to make a purchase in the establishment before being allowed to use their toilet.

All of the beaches in Sitges have outdoor showers. These will either be at the back of the beach or on a wall between the beaches. In general, use of soaps and shampoos is not allowed at these showers – they are simply for washing off the salt and sand from the beach. They are also rather cold! Perfect for cooling off when it gets really hot.

Each beach generally has its own individual company hiring out sun loungers. These normally sit towards the back of the beach and come with a parasol. The beach is sandy rather than rocky, so you may be happy to simply set your towel down on the beach. However, if you want the added comfort of a lounger with some shade these can be hired for various periods. Prices for the loungers vary so it is best to ask the individual sellers. However the loungers can normally be rented for periods of an hour, a half day or a day.

Many of the Sitges beaches have what is known as a ‘chiringuito’. This is a small booth style bar where drinks, sandwiches and ice creams are normally available.

Alternatively, if you are feeling extra lazy, in the summer months men walk up and down the beach selling cold drinks (and they always are impressively cold!) and sometimes crisps, sandwiches or doughnuts. These generally cost more than they would if you were to buy them in a supermarket, but this is the price to pay for getting to stay relaxed on the beach.

Gay Guide to Sitges

With her ancient white washed buildings, banging nightlife and lush beaches, Sitges sits a brief 45 minutes south of Barcelona as one of Europes gayest–and largely undiscovered–gems. The season peaks during the spring and summer monthsbeach.

In the 1990′s Sitges became a gay hotspot , especially in June, July , August and September when Sitges is packed with gay men from all over the world, with an increasing number of Lesbians discovering Sitges for the first time.

In the hot, hot months of July and August the beach is the favourite place to while away your day, but June sees the spectacular Gay Pride and early September the streets are wall to wall Bears for the world famous Bears Week.

Gay Beaches

Sitges’ two main nudist beaches are those furthest east, beyond the church – Platja d’Aiguadolç and Platja dels Balmains. Platja dels Balmains is home to a small restaurant overlooking the beach. They are some of Sitges’s most picturesque beaches as they have less buildings behind them – only mountains.

How to get there: Platja dels Balmains is a fifteen minute walk from Sitges church. It is necessary to simply go past the church and follow the coastline until you reach the beach which is down in a cove. Platja d’Aiguadolç is another fifteen minutes walk along the coast from Platja dels Balmains.

There is one main gay beach in Sitges – Platja de la Bassa Rodona. It sits at the very centre of Sitges’ row of beaches. It is often one of the busiest beaches along the strip.

If you are a gay couple and you don’t fancy limiting yourself to just Platja la Bassa Rodona, you will feel comfortable on all of the beaches in Sitges. As a famously gay town, there is an open attitude towards openly gay couples throughout the town and beaches.

How to Get There: Once you reach Sitges’ promenade, if you are facing the sea with Sitges church on your left, the beach is the third one along from the church.

Gay bars & clubs

Clubbing in Sitges doesn’t really kick off until 3am at the earliest. But before that Trinity Bar and Rubies Terrace Bar make great venues to prepare for the night ahead. The bars finish up and you will find lots of boys and girls out on the streets looking for the bestclub to dance the night away!

During the Summer all of the clubs are busy. Most have various theme nights such as Eighties nights, Topless nights, Foam parties and more… The big gay clubs include Queenz, Union, Organic and Trailer, or the Piano bar for a great atmospherer. The straight clubs of Rickys, Route 66 and Pacha operate year round and are popular with gays and straights alike.

The Gay Beach Party takes place at L’Atlantida every Summer with some famous theme nights including the Fiesta Blanca and the Foam Night. Foam parties are held in Trailer on Wednesdays and Sundays in the peak Summer months.

For dinner and show entertainment you can’t beat Queenz and Parrots restaurant, featuring our own Lady Diamond
