On one hand, urban heritage and culture open their doors to the public through the 48h Open House Sitges festival. On the other hand, late October brings one of the most beloved local traditions: La Castanyada.

Both events turn the weekend into a perfect excuse to explore the town from a fresh perspective, combining architectural history with traditional seasonal gastronomy.

Discover Local Heritage with the 48h Open House Sitges

On October 24th and 25th, 2026, Sitges takes part for the sixth consecutive year in the 48h Open House festival. This international event is part of the Open House Europe network, connecting cultural festivals across 14 cities.

The main goal of the event is to bring architectural heritage closer to the general public. Consequently, visitors and locals get the unique opportunity to explore singular buildings, historical interiors, and spaces of great cultural value that are usually closed to the public.

Furthermore, it is a completely free, casual activity with no prior registration required, designed for audiences of all ages to appreciate local architecture from the inside out.

La Castanyada: Autumn Flavors and Traditions

As temperatures begin to drop, Catalonia celebrates La Castanyada, an ancestral festival honoring the autumn season and the remembrance of loved ones.

During these days, taking a stroll through Sitges is a true delight for the senses. You will easily spot informal street stalls selling freshly roasted chestnuts along the main streets, filling the air with their warm aroma. In addition, all local bakeries and pastry shops showcase their windows filled with delicious handmade panellets.

The essential elements of this traditional celebration include:

Roasted chestnuts (castanyes): Prepared right before your eyes at street stalls and served wrapped in paper cones to keep them warm.

Panellets: Traditional artisanal sweets baked fresh in all local bakeries, made from a marzipan base (sugar and ground almonds) coated with pine nuts, almonds, coconut, or chocolate.

Sweet potatoes (moniatos): Oven-baked sweet potatoes served hot, perfectly pairing with roasted chestnuts.

Moscatell: A sweet traditional dessert wine usually served alongside panellets during family gatherings.

Ultimately, walking through Sitges during this time offers a well-rounded experience: exploring hidden architectural gems by day and enjoying traditional autumn treats as evening falls.

Book with us…

Autumn arrives on the Catalan coast packed with must-see plans.
