October in Sitges always welcomes us with the Sitges Film Festival, which ends on Sunday, the 13th of October. Therefore, what follows is the traditional grape harvest festival of Sitges, known as “la verema“. The entire weekend is dedicated to this festivity, with a poster, presentation, and proclamation. This year, from the 18th to the 20th of October, the 63rd edition of this festival will take place. You can enjoy a wine tasting with a wide variety from the Garraf and Penedès regions, as well as traditional events such as the pressing of the first must, the grape treading contest, and the harvest proclamation. Most of the events will be concentrated on Fragata Square. It is a unique opportunity to enjoy a festive atmosphere, learn about the winemaking process, and learn about the traditions of the town, as the figures of the “pubillas” and “hereus” of Sitges are present in most events, people who represent some of the town’s entities and maintain this traditional image. Sitges Malvasia is also very present during this weekend, as it is the pride of the town, a unique and exclusive handcrafted wine from the area that is also macerated under the sea.

The harvest is not the only event in Sitges during October. Halloween is approaching, and therefore, “castanyada” as well. It’s sweet potato, chestnut, and “panellets” season, and you’ll see some decorations around town for this time of year. This is the perfect time to enjoy the beach with almost no people. October in Sitges has an advantage, and that is that the heat has not completely gone, a sunny day is great to go to the beach and even swim in the Mediterranean waters of the Sitges coast.

Sitges is rich in its culture and heritage from past populations, and recently a 3rd-century BC vase was discovered, which has encouraged the resumption of guided tours of the historical heritage. The Department of Culture is once again offering free archaeological tours of the old town of Sitges on Saturdays, September 7 and 14, October 19 and 26, and November 9 and 23. The tours will be conducted in Catalan and Spanish to promote the city’s archaeological heritage. Saturday, October 19 at 5:00 pm in Catalan and Saturday, October 26 at 5:00 pm in Spanish. All groups start at the town hall square.

Sitges is a gem, every month of the year there is always something to do, and it’s even more comfortable if you stay in one of our more central apartments.
